According to the press release “Lexis+ AI is built and trained on the largest repository of accurate and exclusive legal content, leveraging an extensive collection of documents and records to provide customers with trusted, comprehensive legal results with unmatched speed and precision and backed by verifiable, citable authority.”  Lexis is not yet announcing the release of the product to the public. They are offering potential users an opportunity to learn about or participate in in the testing and development of the product. It is anticipated that the product will launch in the fall of 2023 and will be marketed as an “add-on” to Lexis+.

“We’re thrilled to bring this transformative technology to customers,” said Mike Walsh, CEO of LexisNexis Legal & Professional. “The Lexis+ AI platform provides first-of-its-kind tools for lawyers to dramatically improve the speed, quality, and effectiveness of their practice and business.”

New Lexis+ AI Features

The Lexis+ AI technology offers conversational search, summarization, and intelligent legal drafting capabilities.

Conversational search Is yet another step toward simplifying the legal research process. Lexis had previously launched several solutions to simply research including Lexis Answers, Lexis Brief Analyzer and Fact and Issue Finder. “Conversational search simplifies the complex and time-consuming legal research journey, providing a search experience for diverse legal questions with citations, facilitating lawyers’ ability to complete research effectively and efficiently. “

Enhanced summarization provides a custom summary of legal documents to speed up and guide insightful analysis.

Generative document drafting guides customers throughout the legal drafting process, generating a first draft of a legal document, and allowing users to change the language and tone from a simple prompt.

Addressing Security and Reliability. The Lexis+ AI is designed to address the legal profession’s security concerns. Lexis+AI offers a “state-of-the-art encryption and privacy technology to keep sensitive data secure.” In addition, the product incorporates the RELX  Respnsible AI Principles, which consider the real-world impact of its solutions on people and taking action to prevent the creation or reinforcement of unfair bias.

Customer-driven innovation In conjunction with the launch Lexis is announcing two programs which are driven by a “customer-first approach to generative AI.”  LexisNexis is teaming up with leading Am Law 50 firms, such as Baker McKenzie, Reed Smith and Foley & Lardner, LLP, as part of its early Commercial Preview Program to tap into their expertise for advice and feedback.

The AI Insider program, is open to all legal professionals. “LexisNexis has been leveraging artificial intelligence technology, including natural language processing and large language models, in its legal solutions for years, and we’ve been using generative AI in our research and development labs for more than a year,” said Jeff Reihl, Chief Technology Officer, LexisNexis Legal & Professional. “As a leader in legal AI and analytics, we are best positioned to serve as firms’ trusted partner in launching professional-grade, legal generative AI tools.”

The Market In fact AI enabled research has been incorporated into numerous legal research tools over the past decade. The current promise and perils of open access GPT 3 and 4 has overtaken the legal technology marketplace. Casetext CoCounsel which offers some similar functionality to Lexis + AI was launched at Legal Week in New York. The market has been flooded with generative AI enabled drafting tools. Some firms and law schools are hitting the pause button on the adoption of generative AI solutions. Lexis’ decision to incorporate the RELX Responsible AI Principles into their launch announcement is a smart move. In addition the two customer facing initiatives are an interesting approach. The Commercial Preview Program will give law firms “skin” in the Lexis AI game. The AI Insider Program is a freebie which promises to educate the entire marketplace about AI.
